This part of the Bridgewater Canal between Manchester and Runcorn was constructed between 1767 and 1776 It is considered to be the UK's first true canal as it only uses existing waterways as sources of water rather than navigation channels.

The canal has never closed and is the only UK canal that was never privatised and still in private ownership. However it no longer carries freight but is only used for leisure craft.

The Bridgewater Way is a major regeneration project which ultimately aims to provide a high quality route for walkers and cyclists over the complete 65km length of the Bridgewater Canal between Runcorn, Leigh and Manchester City Centre.

"This section of the Bridgewater Way in Runcorn was officially opened to the public this week.

The opening of the eight mile section runs from Waterloo Bridge to Moore. The Bridgewater Way now connects the Brindley Arts Centre, Norton Priory, Daresbury Science and Innovation Campus and Moore Village with improved access points and signage along the route.

The works done here mean improved the accessibility to the canal side allowing members of the community can enjoy the beauty of the canal more readily.

The towpath itself has been completed and is now suitable for walkers, cyclists, wheelchairs, buggies, fisherman; anyone who enjoys spending time along the canal side, with works in progress to install street furniture and heritage signage along the stretch." June 2008 link
