This blue plaque is on the wall of a pub. It commemorates the fact that it is on the site of a castle that was built in 1173.

The text on the plaque is as follows.
CASTLE YARD

Site of Norman Castle first
mentioned during rebellion against
Henry II in 1173. Mound levelled in
1770 for town's first water powered
muslin mill which was demolished mid
nineteenth century for a cattle market
and extension to the market place.

THE METROPOLITAN BOROUGH OF STOCKPORT
The pub itself was built in the late 19th Century to replace an earlier pub from 1775. It was refurbished in 2014.
