The Paint Creek Trail has the honorable distinction of being the first "rails to trails" project in the State of Michigan. The 8.5 mile route was first constructed by the Detroit Bay City Railroad in the 1800's. The mile markers still in use along the trail designate how many miles you are from Detroit Proper(D-35), and were used to send help during an emergency. Anyone from the area know these markers as "mile roads". Whether you are on Maple Rd. or 15 Mile Road, you are using the old Michigan Central Railroad mile-marking system adopted in the late 1890's!!! The last owner of the railroad was Penn Central. By the 1970's the railroad was in financial trouble and showed interest in selling the right of way. The State of Michigan was able to purchase the railroad bed and right of way in 1982. Today the Paint Creek Trail follows the original railbed as it winds it way through the beautiful hills and valleys of the area. Paint Creek, a well stocked trout stream, can be seen meandering its way along the trail. The Gallagher Road Trailhead boasts both the Paint Creek and Goodison Cider Mills. In the colorful fall months, trail goers can treat themselves to fresh pressed cider and a hot donut. What could be better. Be sure to visit the "Paint Creek Millrace" waymark nearby.
