All of the dozens of citizen memorials here have a relief panel which depicts musicians on a keyboard, horn and bass and the name of the person honored. This one reads:

"Melba L. Steeg

Humanitarian"

This obituary (visit link) informs us:

"Melba Law Steeg, a philanthropist and activist who served on a long list of boards and committees, died Wednesday at her New Orleans home. She was 90.

Mrs. Steeg, a longtime New Orleanian, was born in Mansfield and earned a bachelor's degree in education at Northwestern State University.

Her ties to the university continued long after her graduation. Mrs. Steeg was president of the Northwestern State University Foundation from 2001 to 2003, when she led a campaign that resulted in the school's first endowed chair, the Melba L. Steeg Endowed Chair in Educational Technology Leadership. The Melba L. Steeg Endowed Professorship in Primary Education was established at the university in her honor."
