This building was erected in about 1859 when the 'Priory of the Hospital of St.John the Baptist' which existed on this site from c1220 was demolished. The Priory had been founded by Bishop Jocelyn and his brother, Bishop Hugh of Lincoln. The Priory buildings remained here even though the Priory itself had been dissolved by Henry VIII in 1539.

At some time it became a sub post-office and was given the name we see above the door. Unfortunately the paint has come off the stone lintel in places and it is not clear as to the full name. It looks like 'JEAN'S CROSS / POST OFFICE' which could be a corruption of John's Cross, St.John Street, Priory Road, Queen Street, and Broad Street meet here in a cross roads.

The building is now occupied by one branch of the firm of estate agents, Roderick Thomas, they have three other branches in and around North Somerset.
