The great Labor Day hurricane of Sept. 2, 1935 destroyed almost every building in the Matecumbes.
The W.P.A. and the Red Cross built hurricane proof houses for the families whose homes were destroyed. The walls are 12" thick with steel and poured concrete.
The Sweetings asked for a different type structure, one with an apartment on the second floor and a business room below.
This building had 2 apartments. They lived in one. In Back was a water tank, wash room and 2 bath houses. 4 cabins were across the back. On side and in front was one room with Spanish tile. There was a filling station with one pump.
It was a grocery store at one time. Paul and Edna Chesley had a restaurant and bar (The Key Inn).
