In 1849 Sir Joseph Howe conceived of the railway as
a unifying force in Nova Scotia. an Act of Parliament
passed on March 31, 1854 incorporated the Nova Scotia
Railway mainline connecting Halifax and Truro. This
line opened for public traffic on December 15, 1858.
1867 Saw construction of the NSR's second line from
Truro to Pictou Landing. In the same year the NSR
became the responsibility of Canada's Dominion Gov-
ernment and its existing lines formed the initial
segment of the Intercolonial Railway System. From
these humble beginnings, the ICR managed to bridge
the 500 mile gap between Truro and Riviere du Loup on
July 1, 1876.

In 1893, three small railway companies in the Annapolis
Valley amalgamated to form the Dominion Atlantic Railway.
The Midland Railway Co. incorporated to to build a line
through the rich farm and timber lands of Truro and Windsor
and by October of 1905, the Midland Railway became part
of the DAR.In 1911 the DAR system was leased to the Canadian
Pacific Railways for a 999 year period. the year 1911 brought
about change in Truro. Our station which had been standing
since 1872 was destroyed by fire. Two years later, a new
and elaborate passenger station was constructed. Reputedly,
it was the most up-to-date east of Montreal. Then in 1972
construction began on a new shopping centre which would
include space for the CNR offices. In March of 1973, CNR
personnel moved into their new quarters, and on April 25th
the Intercolonial Railway station was demolished. By fall of
that year the centre was complete.

Truro, as an important railway centre, became known as the
"hub of Nova Scotia" over the years. the railway employed
many men of the town and surrounding area, whose toil and
ingenuity were responsible for making the system work
efficiently and productively. In 1882 Truro formed the first
railroad labour organization in Nova Scotia and was once the
starting point for three branches of the railway mail service.
the roundhouse could store thirty-five locomotives at once
and employed about 150 men. after the demise of steam engines
around 1958, the roundhouse was not as important and ceased
to operate in 1962. Our heritage with the railway consists
of triumphs and disasters, progress and setbacks over many
years, too numerous to record here. However, we must always
remember and be be proud of our railway years.
