The pub has helpfully placed a plaque on the wall of the building that tells us its history.
THE
TWELVE
TELLERS

This Grade II listed building was purpose-built in
the Baroque style for the Preston Savings Bank. It was
opened with much pomp and ceremony, in July 1907. The
public was served inside the grand Banking Hall by twelve
tellers, from behind the 65 feet long counter. The former bank
stands on the site of an older bank established in 1776. it was
originally a large private residence. In 1715, it was owned by
Mr Eyre. Later that year, Jacobite Rebels entered Preston and
proclaimed Prince James Edward Stuart 'King of England'.
The used Mr. Eyre's house as their headquarters, until it
was 'recovered by a large party of dismounted troops'.

These premises were refurbished
by J D Wetherspoon and
opened in January 2015.
