In Westport, at the end of Mass. Route 88, is Horseneck Beach State Reservation.

The beach is on the south side of the road, just beyond a bridge over the inlet. There is one main entrance to the beach. There is also an entrance to the campground at the reservation. The entrance fee in 2015 is $13 per car for Massachusetts residents, $15 for non-residents.

The reservation is about 600 acres of barrier beach and salt marsh. There is 2 miles worth of beach, most of which are monitored by life guard stations during the summer. There are beach houses where you can change.

During the summer, the beach is crowded. It might be better to come in the afternoon and enjoy the late sun. The beach opens into Buzzard's Bay/Long Island Sound and has rollers coming in, which makes it a good beach for body surfing. There is also usually steady sea breezes that make the area good for wind surfing.

The only negative is that red seaweed can collect along the shore. Usually, it is at knee level depth, but, occasionally, it can be further out.
