The welcome sign is situated to the right on a stone wall just inside the entrance, and in front of the gatehouse. Dated from about 1154 the Priory lasted until the dissolution 1538. The remains are well kept and open for visiting,free of charge.

Gatehouse is mainly complete and the Administrative house complete. Most of the other buildings are only shown in outline except for the Priory which is partially in ruins. Cemetery has only three grave slabs, one of which is broken. The comprehensive drainage system is well made and visible. This drained into the nearby river Dearne from which water was also pumped. Kitchen cellar also has a draw well.
In 1538 the Priory was plundered. Estate passed onto various people after this until being placed into state hands in 1932. Now owned by Barnsley MBC under English Heritage Custody.
