The Gazi Hassan Pasha Mosque, situated in Lotzia Square in Kos town historic centre, is one of the most remarkable pieces of architecture in capital of Kos island.
The Gazi Hassan Pasha Mosque was built in 1786 with the support of pasha (admiral) Gazi Hasan Pasa, governor of Kos. Mosque is also called the Loggia Mosque thanks to of the covered gallery visible on the north side. Stone from Roman ruins were used in the construction of this imposing mosque and is believed that the mosque was built on the remains of the Byzantine basilica St. George. The monumental mosque has two floors and an impressive minaret. One of its remarkable features is the double row of windows typical for Islamic art. The mosque, nowadays closed and unused, still bears the scars of the bombing during the WWII. The ground floor is occupied by several shops and restaurants.
