The Mt. Kembla disaster is Australia's worst & 96 men & boys were killed when an explosion ripped through the mine at 2 p.m. that day. Somewhere to bury the bodies saw this parcel of land selected. The majority buried here are in unmarked graves although there are 11 graves with headstones, several containing two bodies such as brothers or father & son. Unmarked graves are denoted by stones & plaques have been added as part of the centenary celebrations. Mass burials also took place.

It was not until 1 August 2002 that the site was dedicated as the Windy Gully Cemetery. Identifiable graves number 58.
