The Union Hill Baptist Church, located at 1430 FM 969, Bastrop, TX, is still going strong after more than 150 years of ministering to the local communities in Bastrop County. This church had built three church buildings since it was organized in 1864. One can assume that this bell was either once part of the original building or was purchased or gifted to this country church as a means of calling in the faithful from that farmlands surrounding it.
The bell itself is forged with the manufacturer's name and location and size of bell on the yolk holding the bell to the supporting iron braces and wheel used to tip the bell to ring. The text on the bell reads: "C. S. Bell Co. 32 Hillsboro: O." The bell and its supporting structure appears to be in very good condition. All are made of heavy forged iron. The bell is rung by pulling a chain which is attached to a wheel about 4 feet in diameter. As the chain is pulled, the wheel turns and rotated the yolk and bell until it hits the clapper inside. This whole encasement around the bell is presently mounted on top of a brick and cement rectangle that rises from ground level about 5 feet. The iron support for the yolk and bell are about four feet hight. The bell alone appears to be about four feet in diameter and three feet or more tall. It is raised to a safe distance so people around the bell will not be injured when the bell is swinging, but is low enough so the support structures can be touched and the chain that works the bell's movements can easily be reached and pulled by an adult.
