In the 18th century the Diebsturm ("thief's tower") was used to imprison citizens of Wetter.

In medieval times the tower which was part of the town fortifications had no name. It only got one later, after ist original function as watch tower was long lost. It was the people who gave it the name "Diebsturm" because it was used as the municipal prison.
