The Mont Ventoux is a stretched in east-west direction mountain range about 45 km northeast of Avignon and about 100 kilometers north of Marseille. The length of the slightly S-shaped curved ridge is about 23 km. The mountain is located in the Provence foothills, it is isolated, however, also associated with the Dauphiné Alps. Together with the Montagne d'Albion and the Montagne de Lure It forms the northernmost and topographically highest part of a limestone plateau, the west from the Rhone Valley, to the south and east by the Durance valley and to the north of the valleys of two small rivers Toulourenc and Jabron is limited. Compared to the relatively gently sloping south side of the mountain, the northwestern flank and especially the northeast flank is considerably steeper. There you will also find rock faces and craggy ground.
Administratively the mountain in the canton of Malaucène in the Vaucluse. Places of interest include Malaucène about 10 kilometers west of Sault and about 15 kilometers southeast of the summit.
The summit is one of the few places from where you can see at the same time the Mediterranean and the highest peaks of the Alps and the Pyrenees in very good weather. There are currently investigating an observatory and several transmission facilities.
