The major focus of the station is the education of the public on the nature of the Sonoran desert and the maintenance of the park. The visitor center has a strong educational focus and the ranger is responsible for providing educational programs as well as protecting the public and the park. The roof the structure has a layer of dirt which was originally planted with native vegetation but has since been left to propagation by windblown seeds.
