"The Oakland Lamp Building was constructed for the General Electric Company for the purpose of manufacturing light bulbs and as noted in the California State Historic Resource Form, is an important remnant of Oakland’s industrial heritage.1 In 1879, Thomas Edison was the first to create a practical application for the light bulb. The next decade was one of rapid growth for the product, both in the infrastructure required for electric lighting and in the expansion of manufacturing. The value of output for production of incandescent lamps in the U.S. was approximately $3.5 million in 1899. By 1909, that value grew to $15.7 million, an increase of 350 percent in just ten years.2 Production of carbonfilament lamps in 1899 was about 25 million; by 1909 more than 55 million carbon filament lamps were made yearly. In addition to the carbon-filament lamps produced in 1909, approximately 11.7 million tungsten-filament lamps were also produced." (visit link)
