Inverell was declared a town in 1875 & there are several fine buildings erected in the 1880's. Mining for diamonds & tin were the initial enterprise but rich agricultural lands, along with a reliable water supply from the Macintyre River saw the growing of cereal crops rise to prominence.
The Oxford Hotel would have benefited from an increasing population. It retains its original design, is well maintained & occupies a prominent position in the business district.
