St Philip is the oldest Catholic Church in Williamson County. A need for a Catholic church in the area was identified as early as 1847, when the Bishop earmarked the present site for the church with money granted by the Franklin Female Academy.

The church was finally completed in 1871. The first baptism took place in 1872. Saint Philip gained Parish status in 1898.

The depression years were harsh for the church. Congregation levels decreased so much that the church was reduced to Mission status again. However, following the end of World War II, the church again attained Parish status in 1946.

The size of the old church became a concern as more members joined the parish. Finally, a new church was added to the original in 1985. with the commencement of Mass in the new 1100 seat church, the original church is now used as a chapel, and for special events.
