The official website for the Big Bend Ranch State Park in west Texas begins “Welcome to the Other Side of Nowhere!” Indeed, this largest state park in Texas is far from the beaten path. Located in a sparsely populated area, it offers typical outdoor recreational activities like hiking, camping, canoeing, etc., as well as some of the clearest night skies you’ll ever see.

The Rio Grande flows from the Rocky Mountains in Colorado all the way to the Gulf of Mexico (almost 1900 miles). Along the way, it forms the entire border between Mexico and the State of Texas.

The scene on the stamp can be found along the “Camino del Rio” (a.k.a. Texas route FM 170) about a mile west of the teepee picnic area. FM 170 is considered by some to be the most scenic road in Texas as it winds its way along the river from Presidio to Terlingua near the entrance to Big Bend National Park.

The stamp was part of the “Scenic American Landscape” series which were primarily used to pay various international airmail rates. According to the USPS, these stamps show the “mountains, canyons, and swamps that comprise our country’s diverse and majestic terrain”. The scenery on this particular stamp is certainly majestic but it’s located mostly in Mexico!
