Marcel Aymé (1902-1967) was a French novelist, screenwriter and playwright. He wrote many children's novels, and was most well known for his classic 1943 short story "The Man who Walked through Walls" or "Le Passe-muraille".
This sculpture is in Place Marcel Aymé in Montmartre. It was created by sculptor Jean Marais (1913-1998) as a tribute to Marcel Aymé, and unveiled in February 1989. It depicts one of the characters from Aymé's novel "Le Passe-muraille", where fictional character Monsieur Dutilleul has the ability to walk through walls and ultimately ends up stuck inside a wall.
The engraved stone plaque reads:
"Le Passe-Muraille, d'apres l'oeuvre de Marcel Ayme, sculpture de Jean Marais, inauguree le 25 Fevrier 1989".
Translates as:
"The Man who Walked through Walls, in honour of Marcel Ayme, sculptured by Jean Marais, unveiled on the 25th February 1989".
