The Graveyard Fields Overlook, at an elevation of 5,120 feet. A Scenic Viewpoint, Trailhead & Rest Area, is located at Blue Ridge Parkway milepost 418.8.
Anyone visiting Graveyard Fields and seeing its natural beauty might wonder about the origin of its name. There are several signs on Graveyard Fields that explain a few theories. The gist being, that many years ago a tremendous windstorm uprooted the spruce forest, or a fire burnt the trees to stumps, that gave the area the appearance of a graveyard.
All was destroyed by a serious fire in 1925 which resulted in the ground being sterile.
