MUNICIPAL BUILDING, 1 New Market St., a red brick structure dating from 1889, was used by a bank until 1926.  It has an ornately designed front with a round tower on one side, and a superimposed, slate-covered dormer on the other.  Across the front is a huge ribbon scroll with dark green border, inscribed, "City of Salem--Municipal Building." -  New Jersey: A Guide To Its Present and Past, 1939, Salem section, pg. 394-396

The building is as described in the Guide.  It was undergoing restoration at the time of my visit. The building continues to house Salem's city offices.
