Hazardville is a section of the Town Enfield, getting it's name from the Hazard Powder Company that operated along the Scantic River from 1835 to 1913.

The entire development of the area centered around the Hazard Powder Company. makers of gun powder. Allen Loomis from Suffield started the powder grinding operation in 1835. His partners were his two brothers and a Mr Denlow of New Haven. To market their product they develped made an arrangement with a sales agent in NYC, Col. Augustus Hazard. Mr Hazard bought out and the firm continued as Loomis, Hazard & Company in 1837. In 1843 Col. Hazard bought the rest of the company and renamed it the Hazard Powder Company.

During the Civil War, Hazard was one of the principal suppliers of gun powder to the Union Army.
