Shortly after a break in at her home, a booby trapped roulette wheel is delivered to artist Suzie Colebrook. Suzie is electrocuted by the device. She was the executor of the late author George Summersbee, and illustrated his crime novels, the Jed Dagger series. Her husband Niall is a publisher and seems concerned that the manuscript of an unpublished Dagger novel has been stolen from Suzie.

Luxton Deeping was George’s home village, and organises an annual literary festival. The organiser is Maggie Markham, the wife of George’s GP brother, Nick. Also involved is Bella, George’s daughter, who runs a bookshop in Luxton Deeping. Bella’s partner is Rob Mead, a gambler who is losing money to the aunt, Audrey, of a Dagger fan, Curtis Braylesford, also an ex boyfriend of Bella. In a bout of gambling Rob loses Bella’s bookshop to Aunt Audrey.

The missing Dagger novel is in demand by several people. In addition to Niall Colebrook, there is also the publisher Miles Rattigan who is desperate for the copy, as is Curtis, and also Maggie who wants the novel as a coup for the festival.

Nelson realises that the death by the roulette wheel is in George’s first Dagger book, The Wheels of Justice. In the book are two deaths by roulette wheel. He manages to trace a second wheel to Cecilie Peterson, but is too late to save her from electrocution. Barnaby notices that Cecilie has a copy of Suzie’s art work on her wall. Phone records show that Cecilie and Suzie are linked through Bella.

Barnaby’s big breakthrough is to realise that George must still be alive, particularly as his brother was the one that recognised George’s body after he was badly mutilated in a boat accident. The body was not George’s, and George had been living with Cecilie. Some time after Barnaby makes the discovery Curtis comes across George in the woods. George gets Curtis to bring Bella to him. This he does. George is followed, however, and murdered.

Barnaby gathers everyone to the bookshop. There he reveals that Nick had helped George fake his death and that Maggie has the novel. Nick had committed the murders out of jealousy of his brother.
