The WILLIAM JOEL STONE MONUMENT, on the courthouse grounds, sculpted by Irvin D. Wight of Kansas City, is and her heroic bronze on a granite base. William Joel Stone (1848-1918) was born in Madison County, Kentucky. When he was 15, he went to live with his married sister in Columbia, Missouri, where he attended the University of Missouri for three years. He was admitted to the bar in 1869, and two years later settled in Nevada, where he served as prosecuting attorney of Vernon County (1872-74). After serving three terms in the State legislature, Stone was elected Governor of Missouri (1892-96), and in 1903 was chosen to succeed Vest in the national Senate – an office which he filled until his death. – Missouri: A Guide to the "Show Me" State,1941, Tour 10, pg. 503.

The monument is much as described in the Guide. Is still located on the grounds of the Vernon County Courthouse and is in good condition.
