Welcome to Cottonwood Creek

Before Nelson grew into a city, Cottonwood Creek hosted several kinds of fish: rainbow trout, mountain whitefish, and kokanee (the freshwater salmon also known as redfish). Today, rainbow trout still call the creek home, and with our effort, kokanee and whitefish could also return.

Fish-friendly and productive mountain streams take a wide variety of forms - fast and slow moving water, shallow and deep areas, and turbulent and calm sections. Healthy stream banks host trees and shrubs, boulders and gravel. Fish need clean gravel for laying eggs, quiet pools or back eddies to rear their young, and trees to shade the water.

To make Cottonwood Creek healthy for fish, we need to keep water pollution, road sand and garbage out of the water. Providing and maintaining a variety of habitats is important to restoring fish populations in Cottonwood Creek. From the Sign
