This plaque marks a memorial for two soldiers who died over a cold winter in Soldier's Gulch, Volcano Valley, Volcano, California.
The plaque stands at the corners of Main and Consolation Streets at the center of town.

The soldiers were serving a mining expedition when a harsh winter took their lives.

The plaque reads:

"E. CLAMPUS VITUS"

“THIS PLAQUE IS IN COMMEMORATION OF
TWO SOLDIERS OF A PARTY FROM STEVENSON’S
NEW YORK REGIMENT WHO DISCOVERED VOLCANO
VALLEY IN LATE 1848 AND CAMPED HERE IN
SOLDIER GULCH THROUGH A HARD WINTER.
THEIR BODIES WERE DISCOVERED IN THE
SPRING AND BURIED SOMEWHERE HERE BY
A PARTY OF MEXICANS.”
“MAY THESE PIONEERS REST IN PEACE.”
“DEDICATED ON JUNE 6, 1959”
