The building was constructed in 1871 as St Peter's School and was attached to the Roman Catholic Church that is located in Wapping Lane, a short distance north east. Today, the building is known as St Peter's Centre and houses amenities, such as a dental practice, for the local community.

The cornerstone is inscribed:

To the
Glory of God
and the advancement of His
Holy Catholic Church
in the religious education of his
children. This stone was laid on
the festival of S Peter AD 1871 by
the Earl of Powis LLD High Steward
of the University of Cambridge
