A stone monument outside of the home at 1134 First Street in the New Orleans Garden district reminds passersby that in 1889 Jefferson Davis, the former President of the Confederate states of America, passed away here.
The monument reads as follows:
"Here, in the home of his friend,
JEFFERSON DAVIS,
First and only President
Of the Confederate states of America,
Died on December 6, 1889.
A truly great American
“Take to thy heart, O Southland. This thy son, the Christian chieftain, the exalted one who strove for the in life. And dying gave the glory which shall ever wreathe his grave.” "
