It was first called Downingville. Later the town’s name was changed to Vinita, in honor of Vinnie Ream, the sculptress who created the life-size statue of Abraham Lincoln at the United States Capitol.

For years, Illinois Avenue and Wilson Street was the intersection of U.S. Highways 59, 60, 66, 69 and 73. U.S. 59 later became S.H. 2 through Vinita.
