The Calder and Hebble Navigation completed in 1770 consisted of artificial improvements to the River Calder and River Hebble to allow canal boats use what used to be un-navigable rivers.

It ran for 21 miles from the Aire and Calder Navigation at Wakefield to Sowerby Bridge, was one of the first navigable waterways into the Pennines. It was an extension westwards of the Aire and Calder Navigation.

Work began in 1758 to make the River Calder navigable above Wakefield. The navigation to Sowerby Bridge was completed in 1770, including a short branch to Dewsbury.

The Bridge
The road was widened in 1938 and two bridges constructed from concrete. This double arch bridge crosses the River Calder.

The second bridge, smaller than this one, crosses the Calder and Hebble Navigation. Confusingly Google Maps labels the other stretch of water as the River Calder and does not name the River Calder where this bridge crosses. However if you switch to satellite view and zoom in it is possible to see a lock at the south east end of the cut and flood gates at the north west end.

In 1938 the River Calder formed the boundary between the market town of Huddersfield and West Riding County Council. There is a date stone on the parapet next to the pavement and it also shows the boundary.

There is also a junction with the Huddersfield Broad Canal on the River Calder, a short distance to the south east of this bridge.
