Marker text:

Battle of
PAINTER CREEK
occurring on August 8, 1862, five miles north of Stockton (now New Cambria) between Col. Joseph Porter's Confederates and Federal regiments under command of Lieutenant-Colonel Woolfolk was part of a wide-spread plan to surround and capture Porter with the 2,000 recruits he was trying to get southward for service in the Confederate Army.

In the curious engagement beginning before noon and continuing until dark there was only one casualty. A Confederate swimming his horse across the stream fell and was drowned.

(Reference Macon County History of 1910).

"In a nutshell, after Porter was defeated at Kirksville, he rode west and crossed the Chariton River. The Union forces at Kirksville did not cross the river to follow him.

Porter then turned south and was trying to get to the Hannibal and St Joe Railroad bridge, just east of Stockton (New Cambria) to meet up with Poindexter.

There were various Federal units in the area of the bridge and intercepted Porter before he could join up with Poindexter. A running skirmish happened, turning Porter back to the north, with the first engagement at Panther (Painter) Creek, then at Walnut Creek and then at the crossing of the Chariton. Porter scattered his men right after this and Porter eventually ended up at Palmyra (you know, that McNeil massacre deal) and had one last skirmish at Whaley's Mill and then Porter went south to Arkansas." ~
