The canal is 127.25 miles long and flows from the inland woollen town of Leeds to the coastal sea port of Liverpool, crossing the Pennines along the way. Work on the canal started in 1770 and built in a number of sections and was finally completed in 1816.

The bridge was originally built in 1795 when the canal was extended from Gargrave to Burnley. The PA bolt is in good condition and on the 4th stone up from the ground level.

Many of the bridges on the canal have cut marks or PA Bolts on them, but not all of them, including this one are on the OS website.

The bridge originally carried Colne Road across the canal near to lock 49. Modern concrete road bridges have now been built on either side of this bridge and these days it is only used as a footbridge.
