The Große Kirche (Great Church) in Leer is the main church of the Evangelical Reformed Church (regional church) and the largest church building in the area.
The master carpenter Isaac Wortmann from Leer designed a representative religious building in Baroque style. The octagonal floor plan in the form of a Greek double cross reflects the Reformed theology, according to which the proclamation of the Word of God is the centre of the church. Models for this kind of Protestant central building were the Neue Kirche (New Church) in Emden and the Noorderkerk in Amsterdam. On September 16, 1785 the foundation stone was laid and after 22 months the building was finished.
The bell tower consists of a square basement, on which the two tapered octagonal bullets rest, which end out into an open lantern. The wind vane in the shape of a three-masted sailing ship is the symbol of the Reformed Church.
