Located in the courthouse square in Edgefield, SC, this large statue is one of the highlights of the area. Strom Thurmond (1902-2003) was born and raised in Edgefield. He was governor of South Carolina from 1947-1951, and US Senator from 1956-2003 a total of 47 years. He ran for president on the 3rd party State's Rights Democratic Party ticket (Dixiecrats) and carried 4 states getting 39 electoral votes. He died where he was born, in Edgefield SC That statue itself was erected in 1984 and is a 800 pound bronze statue sitting on a base.
