Der Berg selbst ist relativ unbedeutend. Seine Bekanntheit beruht auf dem Felsen auf dem Berg. Dieser heißt auch Asselstein.
Der Fels gilt als der König der Kletterfelsen im Pfälzer Wald. Bekanntheit erlangt er auch dadurch, dass er der erste Felsen war, der für die Wanderfalkenbrut gesperrt wird.

Der Fels ist ca. 60 Meter lang und über 10 Meter breit und an der höchsten Stelle 58 Meter hoch. Er besteht aus den Gesteinen des unteren Buntsandsteins (Trifelsschichten). Der Asselstein wurde erstmals Juni 1860 bestiegen. Er hat fast 80 Routen, z. B. Normalweg IV-, Westwand V-, Rolfkamin V+ und Ostwand V (alles UIAA-Skala) Er gehört zu den größeren Kletterzielen im Klettergebiet Südpfalz. Der schwerste Weg ist mit 9+ (UIAA) eingestuft. Unweit östlich des Felsens befindet sich die Kletterhütte Asselstein.
