The castle is documented only since the 14th century detectable, the existing masonry but would for a development in late Hohenstaufen period (min. Mid-13th century.) speak. At the castle were the lords of Wasigenstein who had the castle as a fief of the Abbey White Castle in possession. 1335 castle is under siege as hiding the Robber Baron Friedrich von Wasigenstein and conquered.

From 1360 belonged to the lords of Ochsenstein, change in the sequence often the owner. By 1400, the Lords of Dahn (Than) have the castle as a fief. Friedrich von Dahn sold in 1420 half of the castle of Ludwig von Lichtenberg. To 1483 Lords of Adelsheim have the castle as a fief. After 1485 The castle is in the mode of inheritance in the ownership of the Counts of Zweibrücken-Bitsch. These can be fully renovate the castle from 1494. After they died, the Count of Hanau-Lichtenberg inherit the castle.

Through various vassals, including Cornelius von Hanau is the castle by the treaties of 1604 and 1606 the Count Johann Reinhard I of Hanau-Lichtenberg. During the Thirty Years' War the castle was destroyed in 1635 and since then has been a ruin.
