St. Mary's Church (Église Sainte-Marie), a landmark building in Brussels, Belgium that includes Roman, Gothis and Byzantine design. It is a focal point at the end of the Rue Royal.

BACKGROUND:
The Catholic church has several divisions, one being Byzantine whose worship and beliefs are Catholic, but retain the older practices and methods of worship, and utilize the older symbols and designs in their buildings. The Byzantine division is often refered to as the Eastern Orthadox church.

The construction for this old church began in 1845 and was completed in 1885. The windows were designed and created by the Belgian stained glass artist, Jean-Baptiste Capronnier. The building has fallen into disrepair of recent time, and currently is only infrequently open for concerts. On 9 November 1976, the building received Protected Status through a Royal Decree but it appears little funding is available or being used for restoring or preserving it. The church and its distinctive green dome with stars, and buttressed walls is a landmark in the downtown of Brussels. It is located near the center of Brussels, as are the Golden Palaces, and the church is frequently featured in tourists photos.
