This plaque is dedicated to Battery D, 1st Michigan Light Artillery commanded by Josiah W. Church in recognition of their service during the Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. The plaque describes the action on Sept. 19.

Battery D, 1st Michigan Light Artillery
Two 10-PDR. Parrotts, Two James, Two 12-PDR. Howitzers.
Connell’s Brigade, Brannan’s Division, Thomas’ Corps.
Sept. 19, 1863

Capt. Josiah W. Church, Commanding.
1st Lieut. Henry B. Corbin.
2nd Lieut. Daniel W. Sawyer.
2nd Lieut. Jesse B. Fuller.


After and all night’s march from the vicinity of Grower’s Ford on the Chickamauga, and a half hours halt and formation in line your McDonald’s house, the battery with its Brigade reached the ground upon which the Reed’s Bridge Tower how stands, and with the 3rd Brigade, took part in checking the advanced of the enemy (Liddell’s division) who was in pursuit of troops of Baird’s Division. The enemy appearing on the left in heavy masses. The battery came to this position, in support of Van DerVeer’s Brigade, and assisted in repulsing successive assaults on its front and left. About 1 P.M. the fighting ceased and after several changes of position the battery with the Brigade bivouacked for the night in the field near the Dyer house.

Casualties during the day: 2 men wounded.
