Paul Cranfield Smyth was born in April 1883, the son of a school headmaster. He followed a career in teaching, with a passion for art. He was influential in the Hampstead Sketch Club and the Finchley Art Society, being founder and president of the society. He held several one man exhibitions and had a picture hung at the Royal Academy. For more biographical details see (visit link)

The painting is a watercolour. To the East of the mill the river bends South. The bank of the river to the left of the picture is an island in the river. The today shot had to be taken closer to the mill that the artist would have been, due to the overgrown nature of the riverbank obscuring the view of the mill.
