Silver Bridge was built in the late 1960s. It connects the Bright Angel Trail from the South Rim to Phantom Ranch and the North Rim. This bridge is open to pedestrians only - no mule or horse traffic crosses on this bridge.

Silver Bridge also serves as a support structure for the transcanyon water pipeline, which pumps 500,000 gallons of water a day from Roaring Springs near the North Rim to the South Rim. The pipeline crosses the river under the walkway of the bridge.
