The journey from the Niobrara to Indian Territory became known as the Ponca "Trail of Tears" due to a number of deaths and hardships suffered along the way.
The death of the White Buffalo Girl, daughter of Black Elk and Moon Hawk symbolizes the tragic consequences on the Ponca Tribe.
The grave originally had an oak cross, then in 1913 the marble monument was erected. The town of Neligh has maintained and decorated the grave in memory of the White Buffalo Girl and the Ponca Tribe.
