"The South Carolina State Memorial is located in front of Vicksburg High School on former park property along south Confederate Avenue in the City of Vicksburg. The memorial was constructed of Winnsboro South Carolina Granite and dedicated November 22, 1935. It was sponsored by the South Carolina United Daughters of the Confederacy (U.D.C.) and cost $4900. South Carolina had eleven commands in the Campaign and Defense of Vicksburg, all of which were in Johnston's Army."

To the everlasting memory of
those South Carolinians who
offered their lives upon the fields of
Vicksburg for the Southern Confederacy.

This monument is dedicated
by the South Carolina Division
United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Read this inscription,
Recognize that these were men
Whom power could not corrupt,
Whom death could not terrify,
Whom defeat could not dishonor,
And let their Virtues plead for just judgment
Of the cause in which they perished;

That the State taught them
How to live and how to die;
And from her broken fortunes
She has preserved for her children
