Jell-O brand gelatin dessert was invented in Le Roy, NY in 1897 by Pearle Wait. He was experimenting with gelatin and and came up with a stable gel he called Jell-O, a name suggested by his wife, May. However, Pearle could not market his invention and sold the formula for $450 to local resident Frank Woodward on September 9, 1899. Today Jell-O is manufactured in Dover, DE and sold worldwide. It is a multi-million dollar subsidiary of Kraft which is owned by General Foods.

The Jell-0 museum has exhibits that trace the history of Jell-O from Pearle Wait's original formula to today's rainbow of colors and flavors. A special exhibits pays tribute Jell-O spokesperson Bill Cosby and other celebrities that promoted Jell-O on radio and television.
