Echo Lakes are a pair of volcanic lakes. Upper and Lower. Maybe a slide separated them.

They are narrow and longish in shape. One cannot reach the lower lake by car or road. Upper lake has a general store, two parking areas, a boat ramp and a trailhead to the Pacific Crest or Tahoe Rim Trail. That would be along the Sierra Nevada crest at some 6,500 elevation. The land is controlled by the National Forest and has allowed (for $$$) long term leases where folks have built cabins and some larger homes to the south. Access to the northern cabins is on foot, horseback? or small water craft.
PG&E had early interest in the lake. It is now under the jurisdiction of El Dorado Irrigation District (as a water source for the Tahoe Basin (west).
Driving on Highway 50 in spring, or after a rain, one can see the water just cascading down the rocks to the Tahoe Basin.
The Golden Empire Council Boy Scouts has a camp at the north end of Upper Lake. As I recall, the passage between the lakes in not over 30 feet wide and not 1/4 mile long.
