One of 6 stations built by the CPR in 1946 in the International style, it is the only one still standing.

The station saw passenger service from 1947 until CP ceased service in 1970. The station was used as freight office for a short period before being abandoned.

The station sat empty until 2010 when it was acquired by the city of Owen Sound. Since then, there have been extensive renovations to the roof, canopy, windows and doors. The interior has been largely left as is, due to funding issues, etc. The city has had the building up for lease since 2011.

Visitors are allowed entrance during "Open Doors" events, usually held once or twice a year.

The station was registered as a Historic Place on April 1, 1995.
