The painter family have two daughters, teenager, Jean, and younger girl, Ann. Jean has a part time job at the local pub, run by Mr Painter’s friend, Ron. Whilst waiting for the bus Jean hears the phone ring in a nearby phone box. She answers the phone and is paid compliments by the man on the end of the phone. He says he would like to speak with her again and Jean agrees to answer the call the following day. Jean is being groomed by a stranger.

Jean goes to the phone box over many days and starts to become infatuated by the mysterious stranger. Her sister Ann is becoming worried about the situation. Things come to a head when Jean and Ann go to the cinema. Jean tells a reluctant Ann to go to the cinema on her own whilst Jean goes to the phone box. At the phone box Jean is frightened by a tramp and makes her way to the pub.

At the pub she meets a man who wants change for the phone. The man is the mysterious caller, and Jean is horrified. She overhears the man talking to someone at the phone box. Ann is at the phone box looking for Jean. Ann is being groomed by the stranger. The man sets off to the phone box and abducts Ann. Jean rings the phone box and realises Ann is in danger. Jean alerts her father and the police, who manage to stop the car and save Ann.
