Das Bundesverfassungsgericht in Karlsruhe wacht über die Einhaltung des Grundgesetzes für die Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Seit seiner Gründung im Jahr 1951 hat das Gericht dazu beigetragen, der freiheitlich-demokratischen Grundordnung Ansehen und Wirkung zu verschaffen. Das gilt vor allem für die Durchsetzung der Grundrechte.
Zur Beachtung des Grundgesetzes sind alle staatlichen Stellen verpflichtet. Kommt es dabei zum Streit, kann das Bundesverfassungsgericht angerufen werden. Seine Entscheidung ist unanfechtbar. An seine Rechtsprechung sind alle übrigen Staatsorgane gebunden.
Die Arbeit des Bundesverfassungsgerichts hat auch politische Wirkung. Das wird besonders deutlich, wenn das Gericht ein Gesetz für verfassungswidrig erklärt. Das Gericht ist aber kein politisches Organ. Sein Maßstab ist allein das Grundgesetz. Fragen der politischen Zweckmäßigkeit dürfen für das Gericht keine Rolle spielen. Es bestimmt nur den verfassungsrechtlichen Rahmen des politischen Entscheidungsspielraums. Die Begrenzung staatlicher Macht ist ein Kennzeichen des Rechtsstaats.
Es liegt im Schlossbezirk, in unmittelbarer Nähe zum Zentrum des fächerförmig auf das Schloss zulaufenden barocken Stadtgrundrisses. Nach Plänen von Paul Baumgarten entstand von 1965 bis 1969 ein moderner Neubau zwischen Schloss, Staatlicher Kunsthalle, Schlossplatz und Botanischem Garten. Fünf pavillonartige, in der Höhe gestaffelte Baukörper mit quadratischem Grundriss sind über eine Gesamtlänge von 170 Metern an einem Verbindungsgang angeordnet.
Das Sitzungssaalgebäude ist am höchsten und dem Schlossplatz am nächsten zugewandt. Die Architektur ist mit großen Fensterflächen und Durchblicken auf Transparenz als repräsentative Selbstdarstellung der demokratischen Grundordnung ausgerichtet.

The Federal Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe monitors compliance with the Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany. Since its inception in 1951, the Court has contributed to the free democratic basic order to gain prestige and impact. This is especially true for the enforcement of fundamental rights.
To comply with the Basic Law requires all state agencies. Is it relevant to the dispute, the Federal Constitutional Court are called. His decision is final. At its jurisdiction all other organs of state are bound.

It is located in the castle district, close to the center of the fan-shaped tapering at the Castle Baroque town plan. According to plans by Paul Baumgarten originated from 1965 to 1969 a modern new building between Castle, State Art Gallery, Palace Square and the Botanical Garden. Five pavilion-like, staggered in height building with a square floor plan is arranged over a total length of 170 meters at a connecting passage.
The boardroom is the highest building and facing the Palace Square the next. The architecture is oriented with large windows and perspectives on transparency as a representative self-representation of the democratic order.
