Ebenezer Scrooge buries his partner, Jacob Marley, at a poorly attended funeral. Scrooge turns into a miserly man, denying comfort to those around him. He even begrudges giving his clerk, Bob Cratchit, time off for Christmas.

At Scrooge’s house the ghost of Jacob Marley appears to Scrooge. The ghost warns Scrooge that he will pay for his miserly ways in the after life. Three ghosts will appear on three success nights to persuade Scrooge to change.

The ghost of Christmas past shows Ebenezer his childhood. Ebenezer spent his holidays at school after being rejected by his father, until his sister Fran managed to bring him home. Later the ghost shows Ebenezer at the Fezziwig Christmas party and his romance with a girl called Belle. Belle eventually rejects him because of his obsession with money.

The ghost of Christmas present takes Scrooge to Bob Crachit’s house. Crachit has a crippled son, Tiny Tim. Although Scrooge has sympathy for Tim, the ghost tells him that Tim will die. The Crachit Christmas dinner is a meagre affair and Scrooge is ashamed when he hears him being berated by Mrs Crachit.

The ghost of Christmas yet to come takes to Scrooge to London. There they encounter members of the Stock Exchange joking about a dead man. They also encounter a fence that is fencing the stolen goods of the dead man. Next, the ghost takes Scrooge to see Bob Crachit’s grief at the death of Tiny Tim. Finally the ghost takes Scrooge to the grave of the reviled man, it is the grave of Scrooge.

Scrooge vows to mend his ways. Realising it is Christmas day Scrooge despatches a turkey to the Crachit household and gives Bob Crachit a pay rise.

Scrooge awakes in his own bed, clinging to the bedpost. He is overjoyed to find he is still alive, and begins laughing hysterically. Scrooge throws open the window and, after speaking to a young boy, discovers it is still Christmas Day (and the spirits have done their work in a single night). Scrooge pays the boy to fetch a large turkey from a local butcher shop, and has the bird sent to the Cratchit house. Scrooge plays with some children in the street, and sings in church. He goes to Fred's home, where he is welcomed with open arms and reconciles with Fred and Fred's wife.
